Milan Design Week: Relaunching an iconic classic

Varier is proud to announce the launch of the Ekstrem in five new colours at the Milan Design Week this week. The redesign was created by Shane Schneck from Office for Design.

About the chair:

The Ekstrem chair is seen as one of Norway’s first postmodern designs and has achieved iconic status due to its unique and visionary qualities. It is an object that invites a multitude of interpretations. With its unusual shape and empathic linkage of structure and function, the Ekstrem is based on a functional analysis of varied sitting positions: It is an invitation to play. At the same time, there is something uniquely artistic about its well-proportioned assemblage of cylinders. Ekstrem manifests a rare blend of functionality, dynamism and creative imagination.

About the designer:

Like many talented industrial designers of his generation, Terje Ekstrøm (1944 – 2013) had one foot in crafts and the other in industry. He trained as a cabinet maker and upholsterer before studying interior and furniture design at the National College of Art and Design in Oslo, Norway. Ekstrøm’s work contributed to a new vitality and independence to the Norwegian design scene of the 70s and 80s, at a time of significant cultural and social change. The designer represented a new generation of designers who challenged the ideas of Scandinavian design. Although he is today seen as one of Norway’s first postmodern designers, Ekstrøm’s original output and its mediation is also connected to the ideals of the modern movement and later pop culture.
