Since 1979, our products have led the way in innovation within our field and inspired creativity in workspaces and homes across the world. We believe that we can live healthier and more sustainable lives by being in balance. To us, being in balance means a mixture of stability and movement. Our versatile collection of chairs reflect our commitment to human-centered design, focusing on people’s needs as a starting point. Simply put, we bring color, play and function to ergonomics.
Varier is a furniture company based in Oslo, Norway.
We design and produce high-quality ergonomic chairs that invite people to move while they sit.
Our chairs have been meticulously designed in close collaboration with some of the most tradition-breaking and unafraid Scandinavian designers, including Opsvik, Øie, Ekstrøm, Salto and Sigsgaard, who have been widely recognized for their positive effects on health.Peter Opsvik took furniture design and turned it upside down in the 1970s. He was an ambassador of the revolutionary balans® concept, which first introduced this new generation of Norwegian designers to new forms of sitting that allowed for kneeling, tilting forward, open hip positions and for overall greater corporal mobility. To Opsvik, the true enemy of the body, and of life, was monotony. He observed that holding the most highly recommended sitting position for too long could easily become exhausting for the body. To him, variation was the remedy for monotony and freedom of movement meant responding to our body’s most natural instinct. He proposed that there was not a single perfect posture, but rather that there were many optimal ones. He designed pieces that were dynamic and allowed us to alternate between these different optimal positions. Opsvik’s approach to design is humanistic and holistic, it listens to our bodies, it supports us while giving us freedom and it aims to elongate our lives and that of the environment. That is the foundation of how we look at ergonomic design.
Lastly, we must recognize that we wouldn't be anything without creative collaboration, it still remains as one of the main pillars in our history and process. In the same way those daring designers came together decades ago in the name of innovation and disruption, we have joined forces throughout the years with fresh voices within the contemporary textile and design industries. For example, our fabric selection is curated by internationally renowned architecture and design firm, Snøhetta. And, our textiles are produced by Kvadrat, a leader in design innovation and contemporary textiles and our trusted partner since 2006. Together, we have produced a textile collection consisting of 47 carefully considered options, in a range of versatile hues in mixed qualities, all of which contain a majority of either recycled content or renewable natural resources. Like every-thing else we do, these textiles pay homage
