Sustainability
Our commitment
We believe in the inherent sustainability of enduring products. That’s why we strive to design premium-quality furniture with timeless appeal. At Varier, we take responsibility by thoughtfully considering every choice we make and its impact on both people and planet. From carefully selecting materials to collaborating with trusted partners and refining our packaging, our commitment to better and less wasteful production standards is at the heart of everything we do.
Environmental Product Declarations
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardized document that provides transparent, verified data about the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle. It is based on a Life Cycle Assessment and contains detailed information on materials used, degree of recycled contents in both the product itself and packaging, climate footprint and which parts of the chair can be recycled when it can no longer be used for its intended purpose. If you are interested in learning more, EPDs for all products can be found by following the link below.
Materials
We collaborate closely with skilled suppliers around the world to create and deliver chairs of uncompromising quality, sourcing from different regions based on raw materials and crafting expertise.
We source all our wood responsibly within the EU, prioritizing suppliers close to our place of production to minimize the impact of transportation. Plywood is a recurring material in our collection and an important element in several of our most iconic designs. Plywood is created by layering thin sheets of veneer, gluing them together in a cross-grained pattern for strength and durability. This method reduces waste as it allows us to make use of a larger variety of wood, which otherwise might have been discarded on the basis of visual imperfections. Plywood strikes the perfect balance between strength and flexibilty, it equipped to endure the movements characteristic for Varier chairs. Plywood is made from renewable resources, and it is recyclable and highly suitable for re-use.
All fabrics are Oeko-Tex, Greenguard Gold or Ecolabel certified.
Quality and craftmanship
The most impactful sustainable contribution we can make, is creating chairs that you will want to keep year after year. Varier chairs are made to last for decades. Our aim is to create timeless pieces that aren’t dictated by specific trends. With their distinctive form, and functional design we hope our chairs will be enjoyed for years to come and passed on. Our chairs are made to last and an average claim rate of just 0.37%, lower than the industry average, supports this statement. We are proud of this but remain committed to refining our processes and reducing it even further. Follow the link below for details on product warranty.
Spare parts
We strive to make replacing smaller parts on your chair when needed easy. We offer everything from a single screw to new cushion sets. Spare parts are available through our network of retail partners and can also be ordered by contacting us directly. During 2026 we will make a range of spare parts available for direct purchase in our webshop.
Logistics and packaging
Varier chairs are safely packaged in boxes made from 90% recycled cardboard. To protect our chairs from fluctuations in humidity and damage during shipment, we use recycled plastic bags. Varier chairs are designed for compact shipping and easy assembly. Sending flat-packed allows us to reduce carbon emissions caused by inefficient shipping practices and ensures that shipping unnecessary air is kept to a minimum.
We are working to eliminate paper inserts by transitioning to digital solutions, making assembly easier while reducing unnecessary waste. After a successful test with the launch of VariableTM Monochrome in 2024, where we included only a single sheet with a QR code linking to the assembly guide, we will expand this change across all our products in 2026.
Transparency and traceability
We take our responsibility as a corporate citizen seriously and work actively to secure fair working conditions for all people involved in our business, be it internally in Varier or with our partners. We comply with all requirements set out in the Norwegian Transparency Act. Follow the link below for more information.
