Sheepskin

Sheepskin is a natural material of the highest quality, originally intended to protect and keep warm. Soft to the touch yet highly durable, it brings a unique combination of warmth, texture and character to Gravity™. No two sheepskins are ever identical. Variations in wool structure, density and original color affect how the material absorbs dye, giving each piece its own subtle variation. The result is a chair that is completely unique. We are happy to partner with Swedish company Skandilock for this exclusive edition of Gravity™.

Scandilock

Skandilock is a Swedish company specializing in sheepskin for furniture and interiors. With roots in the industry dating back to the 1960s, they have more than three decades of experience producing sheepskin products. Founded in 1994 by Claes Borgvall, the family-run company is now led by the third generation.

The sheepskin is sourced from Merino Crossbreds raised in Australia and New Zealand for meat and wool production, rather than for their skins. By using the sheepskin as a natural by-product, a material that might otherwise be discarded is given a new purpose in furniture.

Skandilock works closely with its suppliers to ensure responsible sourcing, requiring partners to follow a Code of Conduct and regularly visiting suppliers in Australia.

Gravity™ is made from top quality beech ply wood from European forests. The ply wood is treated through an iterative molding process where several veneer layers are combined and glued. Through the application of combined heat and pressure, the layers are given their characteristic shape, making our Gravity™ stand out from the crowd.

All wooden parts are flexible and strong, ensuring a sitting experience that is never static. For a beautiful finish, our plywood is covered with ash top veneer, manually sanded and coated with water-based, non-toxic lacquers.

Peter Opsvik

Peter Opsvik (1939 - 2024) was a Norwegian industrial designer, and stands as one of the most influential figures in ergonomic design. Throughout his career, much of which was spent as a freelance industrial designer, Opsvik shaped the way we think about comfort and functionality. Opsvik's philosophy and design approach are integral to the Varier identity, and we continue to maintain a close collaboration with his team, working with one commitment - to reimagine the way we sit.

Assume a reclined position by gently pushing away from the ground and leaning all the way back until your legs are elevated above your heart.

When Peter Opsvik designed Gravity™ in the early 1980s, his intention was to create a single chair which could accommodate as many activities as possible. Read on to learn more about the most eye-catching chair in the Varier collection.
